 “From Malt to Vault”

The Exhibition Where the Guinness Story Begins

Housed in the former Ardclough National School, “From Malt to Vault” traces Arthur Guinness from his Kildare roots to his legendary 9,000-year lease at St. James’s Gate in Dublin — a story of ambition, barley and black porter.

Interactive touchscreens, display boards, a holographic projection and a short film bring the tale to life, with guided tours available throughout the week.

Arthur Guinness & Oughterard

Just up the road from the centre lies Oughterard Graveyard — a remarkable 6th-century site, and the final resting place of Arthur Guinness himself.

A 6th-Century Site

Oughterard’s history stretches back over a thousand years, with the ruins of a medieval church and monastic settlement still standing.

Round Tower & Castle

A striking round tower and the remains of a fortified castle sit alongside the graveyard, testament to centuries of layered history.

The Guinness Vault

Arthur Guinness rests here in the family vault, marking Oughterard as a place of pilgrimage for Guinness enthusiasts worldwide.
